CHAPTER FOUR

Taking Sides

DANELLE NEVER DID CALL, but Cassie hadn’t expected her to. By the time she got to school on Friday, she pretty much knew Danelle wasn’t coming. She didn’t know what to worry about more: her party that night, or her mom with the cat. There hadn’t been any time in the morning to track down her mom and see how they were.

She must’ve been wearing her heart on her sleeve, because Ms. Dawson asked, “Is everything all right, Cassie?”

She hesitated. “I’m fine. Just worried about my cat.” No need to bring up the party. “She was supposed to have kittens last night but only had one. So my mom took her to the vet.”

“Oh, no. Well, these things work out, Cassie. Let me know how it goes.”

Cassie supposed that advice applied to everything in life. “I will.”

Riley didn’t sit by Cassie at lunch, so Cassie sat next to Andrea.

“Where’s Riley?” Andrea asked. She exchanged bags of chips with Kristin, the girl on the other side of her.

Cassie shrugged. “Hanging out with her new best friend, I guess.”

Andrea quirked up an eyebrow. “Mikaela?”

“Yeah.”

“Don’t worry, it will pass,” Kristin said. “She thinks Mikaela’s all cool now because of the big party.”

“But I’m having a party tonight, too,” Cassie said, her frustration coloring her words. “And Riley said she’d be there. She promised! Now she talks like she’s about to ditch me for Mikaela’s stupid party.”

“Really?” Andrea’s eyebrows shot up. “No way. We’d never ditch a friend like that.” She looked at Kristin for affirmation.

“Right.” Kristin nodded her head. “Friends don’t do that to each other.”

“Well.” Cassie sighed and opened her milk carton. “I hope Riley knows that.”

“I’d come to your party instead of Mikaela’s,” Andrea said. “It sounds lame to me. I’m not going.”

Cassie gave her a small smile. “Looks like I invited the wrong people.”
